TENS Machines and Period Pain
Period pain affects roughly 70% of women. There is no need to suffer through it, as TENS machines provide immediate, effective and non-invasive relief.
How does TENS help with period pain?
TENS helps relieve pain in three ways;
By soothing the contracting muscles. The electrical pulses act like a comforting massage, relaxing the uterine muscles and providing relief from menstrual discomfort.
The sensations from the tens machine block the pain signals which are being sent to your brain.
The electrical impulses induce your body to release endorphins and encephalins, these are feel good, pain reducing chemicals which are natural in your body.

What causes period pain?
There are two potential causes of ‘period pain’.
Primary dysmenorrhea is the most common form of pain, which are cramps in your uterus as it sheds its lining. It is caused by a substance called prostaglandin – made by cells in the inner lining of the uterus. Prostaglandin makes uterine muscles contract in order to help shed the lining built up during the menstrual cycle. Too much prostaglandin causes painful menstruation.
Secondary dysmenorrhea is less common. It occurs after a woman has already had normal menstrual cycles for some time. It is caused by an abnormality or infection of the uterus, tubes, or ovaries. This pain is often the result of endometriosis or fibroids.
A TENS Machine will reduce pain from both of these types of pain.

Using a TENS Machine for Period Pain:
Electrode Placement:
Place the electrodes on your lower abdomen or lower back: For period pain, position the electrode pads on the area where you feel the most discomfort. Common placements include the lower abdomen just above the pelvic bone or the lower back.
Time for Use:
Start with short sessions: Begin with 15 to 20-minute sessions. You can gradually increase the time if needed. Remember, it’s about finding what works best for you.
Frequency of Use:
Use as needed: TENS machines are safe for daily use. You can use it whenever you experience period pain. Some people find relief with multiple short sessions throughout the day.
Expected Sensations:
Tingling or buzzing sensations: When you turn on the TENS machine, you’ll feel a gentle tingling or buzzing sensation where the electrodes are placed. It shouldn’t be painful. Adjust the intensity to a level that is comfortable but still effective in reducing pain.
Immediacy of Relief:
The relief you feel can vary from person to person. Some may experience immediate relief, while others might notice a gradual reduction in pain over multiple sessions. It’s important to be patient and consistent.
