How to Care for, Clean and Replace Your TENS Electrodes

How to Care for, Clean and Replace Your TENS Electrodes

Quick answer: To keep TENS electrodes working, always return them to their clear backing film after use and store them in a sealed bag in a cool, dry place. Apply them to clean, dry, lotion-free skin. When a pad no longer sticks well, gives a weaker sensation, or the gel looks worn, it is time to replace it. For labour, always start with fresh electrodes.

A little care keeps your TENS electrodes sticking and conducting well for longer. Here is how to look after them, how to revive the stickiness, and when to swap them out.

Keep them sticky

Most of an electrode's life comes down to protecting the gel:

  • Always re-stick them to the backing film after every use. Leaving pads exposed to air dries out the gel quickly.
  • Store them in a sealed bag in a cool, dry spot, away from heat and direct sun.
  • Apply to clean, dry skin. Wash off lotions, oils and sweat first, since these stop the gel gripping.
  • Press from the centre out when applying, to avoid air bubbles.

How to make TENS pads sticky again

If a pad has lost a little grip, try this before replacing it: make sure your skin is clean and dry, and gently wipe the gel side with a single drop of water on a clean fingertip, then let it sit for a moment. A tiny amount of moisture can refresh tackiness. Do not soak them, do not use soap or alcohol on the gel, and do not scrub. If a pad stays unstickable, it has reached the end of its life and should be replaced.

When to replace your electrodes

Replace a TENS electrode when:

  • It no longer sticks firmly even on clean, dry skin.
  • The sensation feels weaker or uneven compared with a fresh pad.
  • The gel looks dry, cracked, discoloured or peeling.
  • The edges are curling or it is picking up lint.

For labour, always begin with fresh electrodes so adhesion and comfort last the whole birth. This is one reason Elle TENS supplies new maternity electrodes with every hire and sells genuine replacements. You can restock maternity TENS electrodes any time.

A few do-nots

  • Do not share electrodes between people, for hygiene.
  • Do not place pads on broken, irritated or just-shaved skin.
  • Do not pull a pad off quickly. Peel gently from one edge.
  • Do not use a pad that will not stick. Weak contact means weak, uneven sensation.

Frequently asked questions

How long do TENS electrodes last?
It varies with skin, storage and use. With good care a pad lasts many uses, but for labour always start with fresh electrodes. Replace any pad once adhesion or sensation drops off.

How do I make my TENS pads sticky again?
Clean and dry your skin, then refresh the gel with a single drop of water on a fingertip. Avoid soap and alcohol. If it still will not stick, replace it.

Can I wash TENS electrodes?
No. Do not soak or scrub them. A tiny amount of water to refresh the gel is fine, but washing damages the adhesive.

How should I store TENS electrodes?
On their backing film, in a sealed bag, in a cool dry place away from heat and sunlight.

Can I reuse maternity electrodes for a second labour?
For comfort, hygiene and reliable adhesion, start each labour with fresh maternity electrodes.
